Electricity Does Not Care

An old Wylex fuse board in need of replacement.

Most of the Bexley, Sidcup, and Bromley areas were built in the 1960s. Some houses on the borders of Eltham and Blackfen were built around 1947. This means that there are 1000s of homes with electrics that is over 50 years old.

It was a common practice back then to install lights with no earthing.

Installations were completed using rubber VIR cabling that is now past its life expectancy.

This cable is toxic and degraded so much so, that the insulation breaks when touched, exposing the live cables underneath.

This on top of the age of the fuse board means that the electrics installed are potential death traps now.

I have recently completed several rewires of properties such as these.

If you have cabling or fuseboard that looks like the picture below its time to replace it to avoid any dangers. Modern day electrical systems are designed to be the safest in the world.

Is it worth the risk of electrocution and fire?

Many homes have also been decorated or had works completed yet the electrics remain untouched.

From an electrician of over 15 years’ that takes safety matters very important:

- Look out for my next blog dating old electrics.

- Consult a qualified electrician.

- Carry out an EICR.

- Don't take the risk and replace old cabling now.

- Electricity does not choose when to ignite or electrocute.
